Coaches and the system for educating coaches are key factors for a country`s long-term competitive success in sports. For several decades after the establishment of specialised sports teams in the People`s Republic of China, the composition of the country`s coaching profession was not ideal. To solve the problem, a national coaching education system, which included athletics as one of the first sports covered, was launched in 1987. It is now fully integrated with the employment policy for coaches. All coaching positions require an appropriate qualification from the system and only those who have taken part in training courses and obtained the relevant certificates can apply for promotion to higher level positions. This article covers the development of the system with special reference to the practical training arrangements for athletics coaches. It describes the management structure, its operation and the support structure. Particular attention is given to the teaching element and details are provided about the principle, mode, content, forms, methods, examinations and lecturers that it comprises. The author concludes with the statement that athletics coaches` education in China has been institutionalised and a checklist of the key factors for the creation of a successful coaches education system.
