Association between male swimmers dry-land strength and breaststroke pull-out kinematics

The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between dry-land strength and the breaststroke pull-out kinematics. Nine senior male swimmers completed 3 x 25 m maximal breaststroke using the glower limbs firsth pull-out technique. Three underwater sequential phases were defined: glide, propulsion and recovery. A mechanical speedometer retrieved the maximum and mean velocities (vmax and vmean, in mEs-1) during the underwater phases. Sagittal plane aerial and underwater images were recorded using two GoPro 6 video cameras (7 m far from the swimmer) and a Kinovea 0.9.5 video annotation tool was used to measure the breakout distance (in m). A handheld microFETR2 dynamometer retrieved the isometric peak force (in N) during knee extension and shoulder internal rotation (at 60 and 90‹, respectively) of dominant (KED and IRD) and non-dominant (KEND and IRND) limbs. Pearson Correlation Coefficient was computed for dry-land strength and kinematic variables (p . 0.05). The breakout distance showed high associations with glide and propulsion vmean values. The glide vmean was associated to a high KED and KEND. Likewise, the propulsion vmean was associated with higher KED, KEND and IRND. High mean velocities in glide and propulsion phases of the breaststroke pull-out technique are crucial for longer breakout distances, with the higher mean velocity achievement within each phase being dependent on the dry-land force, mainly from high isometric knee extension levels.
