(Basketball shooting intensity and efficiency in 3×3 and 5×5 world-class basketball tournaments)

After three-on-three (3×3) basketball became an Olympic sport, researchers` interest in it is growing rapidly. Observing the pace of 3×3 development, the need for evolving training methodologies is also evident. As one of the more relevant scientific questions is whether 5v5 basketball players can successfully transfer their abilities to the 3×3 basketball format. It is already known that some tactical and technical components of basketball activities are basically the same in both basketball games, but the differences in the rules of the game formulate a unique concept of playing and coaching. The aim of this study is to compare the intensity of shots and their efficiency in 3×3 and 5v5 basketball competitions. The study included the 2020 Men`s 3×3 World Tour Masters in Hungary and the 2019 Men`s World Tour Masters. A comparative analysis of the intensity and efficiency of shots in different areas of the court at the 5v5 Men`s World Cup in China. The study showed that in 3×3 basketball competitions, there are significantly more shots taken in five zones of the court, more shots are taken in four zones, and the total number of both throws and shots from all zones of the court is significantly higher than in 5v5 competitions. Also, the overall shooting percentage is better in 3×3 competitions compared to 5v5. These indicators confirm not only the quantitative differences in game performance, but also show that the game with a smaller number of players and a shorter playing time is more intense, which requires special training.
