Influence of match status in match outcome of the game in professional basketball regarding sex and type of competition

The objective of the present study was to analyse the influence of the partial result on the final result in basketball according to sex. The sample consisted of a total of 746 matches during 2019-2020 season, 424 matches from the Men's First Division (ACB) and 322 matches from the Women's First Division (Liga Endesa). To evaluate the study objective, covariation analysis and decision trees were used. The results showed in men`s basketball a moderate association in the first and third quarters with the match outcome, while in women`s basketball a high association in the first quarter and a moderate association in the second and last quarter. The decision trees indicated that the third and first quarter influence in greater probability of winning in men's basketball, instead, in women's basketball the most determining quarters for winning are the first and second. In conclusion, the obtained results realize the first approximation to the analysis of the dynamics of the partial score in the final outcome of basketball matches. Each competition has specific characteristics in the influence of the partial score on the final outcome. While for men it is very important to take the initiative at the start of the second half (Q3), for women the start of the game is decisive (Q1). The composition of the quintets, the rotations of the players and the rhythm of the match are actions the coaches will control to guarantee the partial success and the final success.
