Effect of a six-month training period on VO2 peak, gross efficiency and kinematic variables in the G3 sub-technique on roller skis on intermediate / novice cross country skiers.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of a six-month training period on VO2 peak, gross efficiency and kinematic variables in the G3 sub-technique on roller skis with the main focus on whether there is a relationship between change in work economy and change in kinematic variables. Ten men and seven women (19.3±1.8 yrs., 66.2±10.8 kg, 1.75±0.11m), with background from running rowing and kayaking completed a six-month training period of XC ski-specific training. They performed a submaximal lactate profile and a VO2peak test at baseline (pre) after three (mid) and six months (post) in the G3 technique on roller ski. Physiological measurements together with kinematic measurements (cycle length, cycle rate, joint angles, and angular velocity) were taken 3D (Xsens, Enchede, Netherlands). The gross efficiency increases significantly between pre-test and post-test while VO2 peak did not increase. Cycle length increased significantly, and cycle rate decreases significantly. Kinematic changes were observed with lower shoulder flexion and dorsal flexion, while shoulder exten sion, plantar flexion and minimal elbow flexion angle increased over time. Significant large correlations were found between the development of gross efficiency and the maximal shoulder extension velocity (r=0.57), maximal knee flexion angle (r=-0.69) and maximal hip angular flexion velocity (r=-0.59). It was concluded that by training gross efficiency increases due to longer cycle lengths, which were caused by kinematic changes as indicated by increases in maximal shoulder extension ve locity, with lower hip flexion velocity over the training period.
