Periodization of strength training for sports

Periodization of Strength Training for Sports demonstrates how to use periodized workouts to peak at optimal times by manipulating strength training variables through six training phases-anatomical adaptation, hypertrophy, maximum strength, conversion to specific strength, maintenance, and peaking. Part I. Foundations of Strength Training Chapter 1. Strength, Power, and Muscular Endurance in Sports Chapter 2. Neuromuscular Response to Strength Training Chapter 3. Laws and Principles of Strength Training for Sports Part II. Planning, Periodization, and Program Design Chapter 4. Manipulation of Training Variables Chapter 5. The Microcycle Short-Term Plan Chapter 6. The Annual Plan Chapter 7. Long-Term Planning for Team Sports Part III. Periodization of Strength Chapter 8. Anatomical Adaptation Chapter 9. Hypertrophy Training Chapter 10. Maximum Strength Chapter 11. Conversion to Specific Strength Chapter 12. Maintenance, Cessation, and Compensation Chapter 13. Peaking for Maximum Performance This fourth edition of Periodization of Strength Training for Sports is visibly and contextually different from past editions. Even the title has been changed slightly to reflect a more simplified and straightforward focus on the two major methodological elements of training for sport: periodizaNon and the science and methodology of strength training. We felt this change was needed for two important reasons. 1. Although periodization as a training system has existed for almost 2,800 years-since the ancient Olympic Games (776 BC)-some contemporary training concepts are based on unclear or misleading theories and are influenced by fads and commercialized training equipment gimmicks. The result is that training programs today are often based on pseudoscience rather than on research reinforced by decades of insight ancl expertise. 2. Despite a strong body of scientific information and reinforced investigative findings, the science of strength training for sports dicl not make the expected inroads into the daily training programs of some coaches and fitness instructors. That is why we are sharing with you, our readers, scientific information and expertise in the methodology of strength training that will help you improve the quality of your training plans and programs, and ultimately enhance your athletes' performance. To this end, we have given particular attention to two primary scientific concepts-neitromuscutar physiology and Newton's laws of motion-and added clear, relatable explanations so you can justify the use of strength training and apply the concepts to improve athletic performance. The improvement of athletic Standards, from speed-power sports to long-distance sporting events, occurs only with the improvement of sport-specific strength. This fourth edition is specifically designed for the strength and conditioning experts of the future and for athletes who want to invest in their own success through an improved scientific-theoretical understanding of strength training and its effective application to maximize sport performance. We strongly suggest that you base your training decisions on science, not on myths, anecdotal opinions, or guessing games.
