Periodization, training methods, training components, monitoring, and adaptations used by Spanish volleyball teams

The article provides information about the way Spanish volleyball teams design, carry out, and adapt their training. The approach followed by teams studied is multidisciplinary regarding the roles, decision making, and application. Throughout the season, teams reduce the training volume, reduce the conditioning and technical training, and increase the tactical training. The proportion of conditioning training was similar during the different phases of the season. The use of goal-setting was a common practice used by the coaches studied. The criteria followed to make adaptations were players' development (maturity), being a new player on the team, injuries, specific player position, and playing beach volleyball in the transition period. Game statistics, weightlifting evaluations, jump evaluations, and medical evaluations were the most common methods to test and monitor players. These data allow us to reflect on the reasoning for the volleyball coaches' decisions, which may apply to other sports and situations. The aim of this paper was to study the training methods and criteria used by Spanish volleyball coaches. The sample included 22 coaches from Spain's first and second divisions of the men`s and women`s competitions. The variables studied were related to the criteria volleyball coaches used to plan for training sessions with their teams. The questionnaire contained five sections: socio-demographics, coaches' characteristics, information about the planning that was done, training methods, and training monitoring. Coaching staff of Spanish volleyball teams have a high level of formal education (sport science degrees and the highest volleyball coaching certification) and have multidisciplinary work (e.g., they are often required to oversee a combination of technical-tactical training, physical training, and/or scouting). The training model that was most often used was an adaptation of conventional training, which used the competition calendar as the criterion to make the adaptations. Several aspects were considered by the coaches to adjust the training program for the team or individuals, such as physical maturation, players` specific needs, injuries, or whether players played beach volleyball in the summer. The physical capacities that are most often monitored are strength and the jump test (1-RM in weightlifting exercises and jump test using a vertec or a jump platform). Regarding goal-setting, for most teams, the coaching staff made the decisions (e.g., in quantifiable aspects, such as physical training, nutrition, or injuries). Coaching staff from these teams share different responsibilities and work together to monitor player`s training load. Specifically, the data highlights the interplay between the Head Coach's and the Strength and Conditioning coach's collaboration on the team`s physical preparation goals, as well as the variance in focus and frequency on technical/tactical and physical preparation.
