Effect of 16 week strength and endurance training on hip-knee coordination variability by vector coding techniques of Taekwondo side kick

Introduction: Yeop Chagi (Side kick) is a very powerful technique, in which the athletics simultaneously raises the knee and rotates the body 90 degrees, while extending their leg. There are two main factors that contribute to lower limb coordination: neurological functions and biomechanical constraints [1]. Therefore, the aims of the present study was analysis the effect of 16 week strength and endurance training on taekwondo Yeop Chagi (YC) kinematics coordination [2]. Methods: Nine strength and endurance trained group (SET) and seven non strength and endurance trained group (NSET) participated in this study. We chose the YC being testing movement to collect the kinematics data. Vector coding was performed using the method of Sparrow et al. (1987). A phase plane was constructed, consisting of theta 1 on the x-axis and theta 2 on the y-axis. Coupling between theta 1 and theta 2 was quantified by the coupling angle vc between consecutive coordinates in the phase plane. Results: The pattern of inter-joint coordination of VC was compared by descriptive descriptions with in phase (VC = 45° or 225°) and out of phase (VC = 135° or 315°). The variability of inter-joint coordination of VC was calculated as the average standard deviation of all points on the ensemble VC curves over a YC`s taekwondo for two groups. The alternations of coordination patterns between in phase and out of phase were generally in similar fashion in both groups, except after 48% of trial time. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that there was a significant difference in the pattern and variability of inter-joint coordination presented by VC in groups. This difference may be caused by the pattern of angular position in knee and hip that involved in calculating VC. The coordination results obtained from VC might be comparable with cautions and concept of basic taekwondo philosophy of YC.
