Anthropometric profiles and pulmonary function parameters of male football & hockey players according to their specific playing position: A comparative Study

Pulmonary functions vary in healthy people and are greatly influenced by individual`s height, weight, age, sex, race, nutrition, body surface area and environmental factors. This study aims to assess and evaluate differences in selective anthropometric and lung function parameters between Indian male football & hockey playersand also the role of specific playing positions in both the groups separately. Further, to establish the relationship between anthropometric characteristics and pulmonary function variables of these players. Forty two (42) young Indian male football (n=21; 15.4±0.98 years) and hockey players (n=21; 17.0±1.46 years) subdivided according to three specific playing positions (forward, mid fielder and defender) participated in the study. Hockey players were found to be significantly (P< 0.05) higher mean body weight, body surface area, lean body mass, both right and left hand grip strengths and hip circumference as compared to the football players. In terms of the specific playing positions, a significant difference was observed in case of mean peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) between midfielders and forwards players in football. However, in case of hockey players no such significant difference was observed between the groups. Most of the anthropometric variables except body fat% and waist to hip ratio were found to be positively and significantly (P< 0.05) correlated with lung function variables. Overall, the hockey players were found to have a better pulmonary function as compared to their football counterparts. The study revealed no significant difference was obtained in anthropometric and pulmonary function parameters of the players of both games and also according to their playing positions though hockey players showed higher values in these parameters as compared to the football players. This may be due to the effect of almost similar type of training regimen, nature of the game and more or less similar environment &dietary habit in both the sports groups. Results of the present study may be use full as reference standard for future study and comparison.
