Sensor data collecting system for biathlon

The purpose of this project was to develop further a Sensor Data Collecting System for Biathlon, an Olympic sport that combines cross-country skiing and target shooting. This is a wireless system that collects data from multiple relevant sensors which athletes and coaches can use to analyse and improve their performance. The system consists of different sensors to measure data, a central data collecting unit that collects sensor measurements, and a coach system that analyses and presents the data. The sensors attached to the athlete measure and quantify the athlete's performance when skiing and shooting. The data collecting unit is attached to the athlete and communicates with the sensors through wireless communication protocols. The measured data is uploaded to a database on a web server. The coach system use the web server and an analysing tool to view and interpret the measurements, ideally in real-time. The implementation of a Global Navigation Satellite Systems sensor to measure the position and speed of the athlete was identified as important to further develop the system. Different options were inspected, and a sports watch, Garmin Forerunner 920XT, is incorporated as the Global Navigation Satellite Systems sensor in the system. However, it was found that the watch is not suitable for the system as it proved difficult to provide real-time position data. Two different web servers were developed, an File Transfer Protocol server and an Hypertext Transfer Protocol server with a Structured Query Language database, to research the appropriate server solution for the project. An implementation with the File Transfer Protocol server was found to work, but has limitations on real-time display of the measured sensor data. The Hypertext Transfer Protocol server with Structured Query Language database was shown to be appropriate for the project and is advised moving forward. A test of the total system at this early stage is showing that the system design is feasible, but a smaller and lighter version of the central data collecting unit must be developed as well as further development on the coach system.
