ACL injury risk factors & injury reduction programs in female football players

Implementing neuromuscular injury reduction programs can assist in lowering the incidence of non-contact Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in female football (soccer) players, as well as various predisposing risk factors seen within this population of athletes. The difference in Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury rates between male and female athletes has become well researched, with females being more prone to injury risk. The purpose of this article was to provide a summary of the current literature with regards to ACL injury risk factors in female athlete populations, with a particular focus on football (soccer) players. Additional review of the literature was also performed concerning injury reduction interventions conducted within female football player populations. Using the online database EBSCO, a search was performed to find relevant journal articles from years 2000 to 2018. A manual review of the literature was then conducted to identify articles that met the inclusion criteria specific to this review. Analysis of current research has identified that non-contact mechanisms are the most common cause of ACL injury in female athletes. This increased incidence is believed to be multifactorial and associated with environmental, anatomical, hormonal, biomechanical, and neuromuscular mechanisms. Through effective implementation of neuromuscular injury reduction programs, it is however possible to decrease the incidence of ACL injury within female footballers.
