A high-performance approach to the strength and power training in 200m kayak/canoe

Implementing a high-performance model with an emphasis on strength and power testing and training, when the 200 m program was added to the Olympic games for canoe and kayak, supported the coach and program to achieve podium performances and maximize results on-water. The purpose of this paper was to review the evolution of the strength and power training approach to the 200-meter program with elite paddlers. A high-performance model was taken that included close coaching collaboration, reliable and valid assessment development and a focus on strength and power training in the overall yearly training plan. Relative strength, peak power and power endurance were key performance indicators. As an example, relative strength showed significant correlation with final time and acceleration on the water for men`s kayak thus the goal of a ratio of 4.0 (bench press + bench pull/body weight) was established for the gold medal profile. A form of block periodization was employed to maximize results. An emphasis was placed on injury prevention through unique exercises, periodic movement assessments and tracking through athlete training logs. This focus saw lost time rates of 2.69% in 2013/2014 and 0.67% in 2014/2015 for men`s kayak and 2.84% and 0.73% compromised time on the water. This high-performance model has lead to peak performances for many athletes and leading some to the top of the podium through improved strength and power and minimal time lost training.
