Investigation of the sport injuries in elite kayak athletes: Prevalence and causes

Introduction: Recent advances in sport medicine to improve the effectiveness of sport injury prevention notwithstanding, sport injury has increased in the past 15-20 years, and still remains a major reason for early retirement in elite athletes (Knowles et al., 2006). Aim: the aim of the this study was to investigate the prevalence and causes of spot injuries in elite male and female kayakers. Method: 80 professional kayakers (68 male and 12 female) have been investigated in the current study. A questioner has been used to collect the information regarding the causes, types and the onset time of the injuries from athletes. Result: The results showed that the most injuries were common on upper limbs including palm and wrist. Discussion: Our results indicated injuries are common in palm and wrist, therefore great care should be taken during training and exercise in order to prevent early retirement in elite athletes.
