Application of thermovisual body image analysis in the evaluation of paddling effects on a kayak ergometer

SUMMARY Thermovisual studies are widely applied to the medical sciences. Usually, the thermovision method is used to evaluate various pathological lesions. Sporadically, thermography has been used often to assess the effects of sport exercises involving single muscle groups. No efforts have thus far been undertaken to gauge the usefulness of the thermovision method in the complex analysis of the effects of physical exercise which involves a large amount of muscles. We have decided to investigate the usefulness of the thermovision method by examining the effects of paddling on a kayak ergometer on the thermovisual image of athlete's body. We hypothesized that paddling at maximal intensity in a time corresponding to that needed to cover a 1000 m distance will result in changes in the thermovisual image of athlete's body. In the advanced athletes we should observe change in body temperature around different muscles than in the novice athletes. This study included 19 kayakers. Their pictures were taken using a ThermaCAM SC 640 thermovisual camera. Athletes representing higher performance level are characterized by a greater involvement of muscles located in the posterior part of trunk and shoulders as compared to those with a moderate sport level. Differences in the thermovisual body images of advanced and novice athletes suggests that the thermovisual method could possibly be used in the indirect assessment of muscle activity during paddling on kayak ergometer.
