Wind tunnel measurement of airflow around a ski jumper during takeoff

Takeoff motion is the transition movement from in-run posture to flight posture. Ski jumpers usually perform the entire takeoff motion within about 300 ms (Schwameder, 2008). The aerodynamic force acted on a ski jumper varies dynamically, due to the postural change in a short period. The ski jumper has to perform appropriate takeoff movement for an aerodynamic force to form the most suitable flight posture. However, the measurement of the force during a posture change is difficult and does not yet lead to quantification. We aim at the quantification of aerodynamic characteristics during takeoff movement using computer fluid dynamics (CFD). The objective of this study was to acquire the basic data that inspected the validity of the calculation result of the CFD analysis.
