Cardiopulmonary responses to slideboard exercise in competitive female ice skaters

This study`s purpose was to determine cardiopulmonary responses to slideboard exercise (SBE) at 3 selected cadences and evaluate its appropriateness as a training tool for figure skaters. Fifteen competitive female skaters (ages 15.7 ± 3.2 yrs) underwent a maximal treadmill test to assess peak heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption, and ventilatory threshold. Then cardiopulmonary responses to selected cadences of 60, 70, and 80 slides per minute (spm) were measured at 4-min intervals on a 165-cm slideboard. On-ice HR response to a 4-min program was also determined by telemetry in a subgroup of 7. ANOVA revealed significant increases in all dependent variables with each 10-spm increase in cadence. HR responses to 70 and 80 spm did not differ from the mean on-ice HR response for the 4-min program (p > 0.05). Thus, SBE at 70 and 80 spm appears to elicit HR responses similar to those during competitive figure skating while simulating movements used in competition. Therefore, SBE may effectively match the HR demands of figure skating and be a valid off-ice training tool.
