Anthropometric and physiological profiles in Spanish downhill skiing competitors

INTRODUCTION: The need to optimize the individual performance of Spanish skiers and detect new talents to improve the performance of the national team members motivated us to conduct this study. METHOD: 35 male skiers from 16.6 ± 1.9 years, 67.3 ± 11.2 kg and 1.70 ± 0.08 m in height and 33 female skiers aged 19.7 ± 4.4 years. 58.9 ± 4.9 kg and 1.63 ± 0.04 m tall, members of the Spanish alpine ski teams in the period 1996-2006, participated in our analysis. RESULTS: The mean values of VO2 max ranged from 40.11 ± 4.85 to 43.68 ± 4.88 ml / kg / min in women and 51.24 ± 5.30 to 55.37 ± 07.06 ml / kg / min in men. The maximum aerobic power (MAP) ranged from 107± 28.21 and 130 ± 23.33 W in women and 145 ± 33.91 and 199.29 ± 36.68 W in men. From the anthropometric standpoint, mean BMI values ranged from 17.39 ± 2 87 and 20.59 ± 4.87 in women and from 11.28 ± 3.18 and 12.63 ± 3.61 in men. From the data shown in the somatochart, Spanish skiers have a balanced mesomorphic somatotype and the men seem to have a clearly mesomorphic somatotype. DISCUSSION and CONCLUSION: The values found agree with those in the literature consulted (Saibene et al., 1985, White et al., 1991, Vogt et al., 2003; Neumayr et al., 2003, Emeterio and Gonzalez-Badillo, 2010) with only slight variations that may be due to differences between skiers. The coincidence of physiological and anthropometric values found in Spanish skiers, having few competition licences in Spain are parameters to be considered in the selection of Spanish skiers.
