Ski boots for children (6 to 12 years - beginner and intermediate level) - problem areas and kinesic behavior

INTRODUCTION: Ski boots for children (level beginner and intermediate) between the age of 6 and 12 cause problem zones, usually pressure marks, due to the ongoing growth of a child's foot. These areas prevent the right movement of the feet. A child's movement has to be taken into consideration whilst the design and the development of a childrens ski boot. METHOD: Data ascertainment with questionnaire (n=38) and Interviews (n=4) made with experts in children skiing (head of a skiing school, senior ski instructor, specialist ski dealer, youth coaches at the organisations: "Alpenverein" and "Naturfreunde"). Measurement to determine the anatomical form and size of children's feet (n=88) and measurement of ski boots (n=12). RESULTS: Problem zones such as pressure marks have been identified around the ankles, the back and the dorsum of the foot (fig. 1). These results have been backed up with the outcome by comparing the measurement of the children's feet with the measurements of the ski boots (lenght and width of the feet to boot size). The movement of the children as seen over a whole day has shown that children do skiing, walking and Standing at the same percentage (fig. 2). Enough breaks and alternative Programme throughout a day outside will support a child's bearing according to the outcome of studies. DlSCUSSION: Recommendations to improve the shape and the use of new materials, amendments and solutions for growing feet CONCLUSION: Recommendations to improve the design of a ski boot sole, the buckles and the liner to increase the performance of the children's ski boot in consideration of a childs movements.
