The impact of body composition on the success rate of elite soccer players on aerobic tests

in activities where the body mass must be lifted repeatedly against gravity. The purpose of the present study was to look at the connection between anthropometric measurements and results of aerobic testing in the case of elite professional soccer players. Thirty-one professional male soccer players of an elite club from the 1st National League of Serbia and Montenegro participated in the study. Measurements were collected at the start of the first conditioning period. Methods The following was measured and analyzed: age, body fat content (F%), test duration (tt), maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) and HR were measured directly (Jaeger Oxycon pro). Body composition was assessed by skin fold measurement. The data is presented as mean ± SD and compared with documented data from clubs from other national leagues. Results The comparison of the data revealed a linear correlation between VO2max and age(r=-0.4075), and VO2max and body fat content F%, with a statistical significance of p<0.05. No correlation between tt and F% (ñ=-0.3599) was determined. Discussion/Conclusion The research showed that athletes with lower percent of body fat achieve better results in aerobic tests, measured in VO2max. Also, within the club younger players achieved better results, as it is known that VO2max decreases with aging. Comparing results with data from other national league clubs, we have come to the conclusion that our soccer players are much less fit and have lower stamina.
