Current issues affecting strength and conditioning coaches: Professional standards, coaching structures, mentorships & remuneration guidelines

BLUF Strength and conditioning coaches may be affected by a number of industry issues that impact career development. It is recommended that coaches, administrators and sporting organisations be familiar with professional association industry standards, internship obligations, coach mentorship, and remuneration guidelines. ABSTRACT Career development and progression in the field of strength and conditioning requires coaches to navigate successful professional transition from an early career strength and conditioning coach to coach mentors. However, many strength conditioning coaches often find themselves unsure of their rights when presented confronting employment-related challenges early in their career. It is essential that strength and conditioning coaches obtain fundamental knowledge and understanding of key industry issues that may impact potential career development and become familiar with professional associations that provide governance and direction for their respective industry standards, such as the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and UK Strength and Conditioning Association. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to examine current issues affecting early career strength and conditioning coaches and expand our understanding of key governing body principles and frameworks that underpin professional standards. A secondary purpose is to provide recommendations for early career strength and conditioning coaches, administrators, and sporting organisations regarding industry issues identified in the literature, such as placement and internship obligations, coach mentorship, job actions and remuneration guidelines. Literature and data was sourced via online journal databases and professional governing organisations using relevant terms. It is recommendations that strength and conditioning coaches, administrators, and organisations become familiar with placement and internship obligations, professional standards and remuneration guidelines. Additionally, sporting organisations and strength and conditioning coaches adhere to the Australian Sports Commission requirements for working in Federal government funded national sporting programs. Such recommendations provide a point of reference to further enhance professional industry standards.
