Fitness testing battery for rugby league: Obtaining meaningful information from the data

The recommended tests for rugby league players include body mass, height, 7-site skinfold measurement, countermovement jump, squat jump, 5-0-5 change of direction speed test, 40-meter sprint test, 1RM squat and bench press, and 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test. The purpose of this article was to provide practitioners with an improved understanding of selection and implementation of valid and reliable field based-testing and data interpretation methods in relation to rugby league football. Practitioners are often faced with limited time and resources for assessing their athletes to gain meaningful insight into the underlying physical and physiological constructs. Therefore, practitioners need to create an effective field-based testing battery that is both valid and reliable in a practical setting. The recommended tests and measurements include body mass, height, 7-site skinfold (?7), countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), 5-0-5 change of direction speed (CODS test, 40-meter sprint test, 1RM squat and bench press, and the 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (30-15IFT). The selected tests and measurements can allow practitioners to gather more meaningful information via proposed calculations and aim for the recommended target values provided for male and female rugby league players. The derived information from the testing battery include measures for fat mass, fat free mass, % body fat (%BF), lean mass index (LMI), jump height (JH), peak power (PP), power-to-body-mass ratio (P:BM), %pre-stretch augmentation, reactive strength, eccentric utilization ratio (EUR), change of direction (COD) deficit, sprint momentum (SM), relative strength, velocity achieved at the end of the 30-15IFT (VIFT), and VO2max .This selection provides a robust strategy to compare and contrast and assess strength and weaknesses of the rugby league players.
