The effect of anthropometry on barbell trajectory for elite female weightlifters at the 2009 Pan American Championships

The purpose of this study was to determine if relationships exist between horizontal barbell displacement during the pulling phases of the snatch lift and athlete anthropometry. Thirty-six female weightlifters at the 2009 Pan American Championships were measured for anthropometric variables and videotaped during competition. The results show that relationships existed between second pull and total barbell displacement and several anthropometric proportions involving Shank and Height. Significant correlations were also found between horizontal barbell displacement and absolute anthropometric variables in the 53 kg and 75 kg weight classes. A higher rank and medaling was correlated to a longer Torso. All absolute anthropometric variables were significantly different between weight classes with the exceptions of Torso and Thigh lengths. This study was a first step towards understanding the previously unexplored relationship between athlete anthropometry and barbell movement. A better understanding of this association may help to optimize weightlifting technique, performance, and athlete selection.
