Usage of visual feedback technologies for performance improvement of male artistic gymnasts

The rules on how the rings exercises in male gymnastics are composed, rely on different body movements based on controlled alternation between the dynamic and isometric muscular contraction. The main factors that determine the accuracy of executions in male artistic gymnastics rings are the balance control, the quality of processes that coordinate muscle activity, and the level of relative muscle strength. Specific training involves muscle and joint efforts of maximum intensity. The objective of this study was to design a training methodology that would allow effort volume and intensity to be adjusted according to individual features, and in the same time, to be able to avoid maximum intensity demands. The methodology we proposed has been developed and applied in laboratory conditions, based on a Force Control System, in isometric contraction conditions, consisting of a hardware and a software component. This system ensures both controlled effort dosing and pausing between repetitions, as well as the subject`s performance in terms of force variations and training task viewing on a monitor, in real time, under a graphical representation. The system provides information on the athlete's execution in real time, with a precision of 1 ms, and displays the information to the athlete in a graphical form every 10 ms. The study has been conducted in Bio-motricity laboratory of the National Institute for Sport Science with the participation of six elite gymnasts. The progress gained by athletes after following the application of this methodology demonstrates the benefits of the use of the technology, allowing accurate measurement of the effort and providing real-time information on the quality of sports performance.
