(eSport "is" not sport—eSport and sport have meanings: An analysis from the perspective of a philosophy of language instead of ontological debates)

In the recent past, no issue has preoccupied organised sport, sports science and sport politics more than the question of whether or not eSports—or eGaming—can be classified as belonging to sport. The discussion on the position of the DOSB (Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund) has largely been confined to a verbal clash of apodictic statements. Linguistic requirements have hardly been considered. The characteristic for the current debate is that the lack of an acknowledged definition of sport is criticised, without questioning if this is at all possible, sensible or even necessary. This contribution aims at disclosing the language-logical basics for definitions, or rather the attribution of meanings in general, in order to then discuss possible answers to the questions concerning the relations between eSports—or eGaming—and sport. For this purpose, an adequate foundation is provided by the philosophy of the "ideal language", that of the "ordinary language", and by the empirical psychological-linguistic prototype model. A common feature of these approaches is that they provide the basis for determining those areas where the question of eSports has to be met by means of definitions, and those where it is possible as an alternative to fall back on the attribution of meanings in the context of the ordinary language. While a definition of sport is justifiable for judicable organisations like the DOSB, this neither seems to be appropriate for an everyday use nor, for example, for describing the domain of sports science. From a historical and systematic perspective, this article points out possible characteristics and meanings of sport which apply to both the normative definition of sports organisations and everyday language.
