Analysis of Olympism from the concept of ecological civilization

Introduction: As a two-edged sword, industrial civilization created enormous material and spiritual wealth for human beings, but it also brought about a number of ecological problems. Solving this problem and realizing the sustainable development of the mankind-nature-society link is the most important issue to consider. Thus, the concept of ecological civilization was developed. As this concept is based on the sustainable development of mankind, the concept of ecological civilization is used to understand all the activities of human society. The purpose of this paper is to analyze Olympism from the concept of ecological civilization, to explore the theoretical basis of Olympism synchronizing with civilization, and to provide a theoretical basis for Chinese sustainable development of the Olympic movement. Methods This paper uses the documentation data, logical reasoning method, and analyzes the definition of Olympism in Olympic Charter from the view of ecological civilization. Results 1) The core of Olympism is the development of people through sports, especially for the youth to access the coordinated development of body, will and the spirit. This is in agreement with the concept of ecological civilization. 2) Sport is integral in the continual growth of human-kind, and under the guidance of ecological civilization, sport could help to better interpret Olympism. 3) The concept of Olympism acknowledges that sport must be combined with education and culture. Ecological civilization offers three integral parts of the ecosystem which must be coordinated to develop the physical, psychological and spiritual sides of human-kind. Thus the concept of Olympism provides a balanced and coordinated view. 4) Olympism stresses that Olympic athletes are role models. Equal participation and the "fair and just" principle are emphasized in sports activities. Similar concepts are demonstrated in ecological civilization. Fairness and justice for fighting against doping, hard work, working to better oneself and the spirit of great unity and friendship create a fair and equal ecological civilization. Discussion The Olympic Games have contributed to the sustainable development of human-kind. However, this paper only discussed Olympism in terms of ecological civilization, and thus requires further investigation.
