Teaching program of carving turn

INTRODUCTION: Many ways of teaching a carving turn are studied and practiced. The purpose of this study is to present a teaching program of the carving turn in skiing. METHOD: The method of developing a teaching theory is as stated below: 1. The technical elements of the carving turn were analyzed based on an advanced skier"s technique. 2. Propose the teaching theory of the carving turn. In teaching theory, the goal of teaching, teaching content, teaching materials and teaching methods were described. 3. Make the teaching program which was described in the process of teaching. 4. The experimental lesson was carried out. Subjects were seven male advanced skiers who were not able to ski in a carving turn. RESULTS: The important technical elements of the carving turn were selected that "appropriate Position of center of gravity to carving turn," "pressure on the front of skis," "angulation and counter rotation at the end of the turn," "gradual changing of the high Position at the beginning of the turn to the low Position at the end of the turn," "gradual changing of the pressure and release," "effective use of arms and poles swinging forward." In teaching theory, the goal of teaching was to master the basic carving turn on an easy slope. The teaching progression to achieve the goal was shown in Table 1. First, they learned the basic carving turn in upright Position. Second, they learned the carving turn in three types of tuck position: tuck in high Position, in middle position, in low position. Third, they learned the carving turn putting hands on their backs and leaning forward to a low position to master putting pressure on the front of the skis. In the next method, putting hands on knees in carving turn, they learned the angulation and counter rotation position. In carving turn in high position to low position and Butterfly turn, they learned gradual changing from high position to the low position. Based on this teaching progression the teaching program was made. After the experimental Session, subjects mastered the basic carving turn. In a questionnaire completed after the teaching Session, subjects rated the lesson favourably and felt it was easy to understand. DISCUSSION: From the video image analyzed, some subjects had less angulation and counter rotation. Therefore, it was necessary to set another teaching method to master the angulation and counter rotation. CONCLUSION: In this study, the teaching program of a carving turn was presented. The teaching program was evaluated as one that was effective for the learner and welcomed by the learner. However there were a few improvements in the teaching program.
